An Ames man who was found dead at a home in north Ames last week has been identified as a former associate principal at Marshalltown High School.
According to an Ames Police Department press release, investigators have identified a man who they believe shot himself in a basement at 3715 Columbine Circle as 47-year-old William E. Terry of Ames. The Marshalltown Community School District listed Terry as an associate principal at MHS as recently as last school year.
Terry was also an alumnus of Iowa State University and a former Woodward Academy special education teacher, according to an ISU news article from 2015.
According to an Ames PD press release Friday, the death occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. The release stated that Marshalltown Police Department officers were attempting to enter the Columbine Circle home when they heard a gunshot. Ames Police Department officers were then summoned to the scene. The officers proceeded to enter the home, where they found a deceased male in the basement, who officials believed died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Marshalltown PD also issued a press release on Friday indicating the reason for the officers’ investigation in Ames. According to the release, the department was at the home to serve a search warrant and arrest warrant to a former MCSD employee. On July 6, authorities received allegations that the former school employee had sexually exploited a former student and had engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with that same student.
Ames PD is now heading up an investigation in connection with the apparent suicide.
Marshalltown PD is continuing its investigation into the claims of sexual exploitation and misconduct by the former school employee, according to its release.
This is officially the third known case of potential sexual misconduct by Marshalltown school employees in recent time. On June 30, Marshalltown PD announced the arrest of 26-year-old Mark Esquivel of Marshalltown on claims he had inappropriate contact with a 17-year-old juvenile during his time as a school employee. Esquivel had been a Physical Education instructor. Just a week later, Marshalltown PD announced the arrest of another school employee, Adam Edgington of Nevada, for sexual exploitation of a 12-year-old girl at Miller Middle School. Edgington had been a Language Arts teacher at the school.
Thursday’s apparent suicide in Ames also marks the second recent death involving accused school employees. Edgington, just over 24 hours after he had been released following his arrest, was found dead in a vehicle south of Nevada. The Story County Sherriff’s Office deemed Edgington’s death as a suicide.
