JUST IN: Authorities offering cash reward for info on 2021 Ames homicide

The Ames Police Department has announced a cash reward for information that leads to the identification of a suspect responsible for a 2021 homicide.

According to Ames Police Sergeant Amber Christian, the $1,000 cash reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa. The investigation surrounds the death of 23-year-old Stashaun D.L. Brown of Des Moines, who was shot and killed outside of Elk’s Lodge at 522 Douglas Avenue in Ames. The shooting occurred just before midnight on October 29, 2021.

Following the incident, Ames Police Commander Jason Tuttle told StoryCounty.News that one 911 caller reported hearing “at least eight shots” near downtown. “When the officers got there, it was very chaotic,” Tuttle said. “People were leaving quickly out of the parking lot by foot and by vehicle.”

The male victim, later identified as Brown, was found by officers in the adjacent parking lot amid the chaos. Brown was later pronounced dead at Mary Greeley Medical Center.

Tuttle said that investigators believed “multiple shots were fired by several groups of people” who were attending a private event inside the venue. “We have very little information,” Tuttle acknowledged the morning after the homicide. “Several people we tried to talk to said they didn’t want to talk to us. They said they didn’t see anything and were not cooperative.”

Authorities were also led to believe that the shooting was preceded by a fight that began at the scene. “There was some type of altercation that occurred right outside the entry doors of the lodge,” Tuttle stated. “We think it started out as a physical altercation and then turned into multiple people pulling out guns and firing at each other.”

According to a press release sent out Wednesday, people who were at the event are encouraged to report any information pertinent to the shooting by calling Ames PD at 515-239-5133. Anonymous tips can also be made by calling 515-239-5533. Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa can be contacted at 515-223-1400.
