Harbor Freight store in Ames set to open Saturday

Harbor Freight is officially making its first appearance in Story County by commencing operations at a new store in north Ames on Saturday.

Brad Harken, Harbor Freight District Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the store’s soft opening this weekend during a recent interview with StoryCounty.News. “I’ve been begging to be in Ames for two or three years,” he explained. “It’s kind of a missing link in Iowa.”

According to Harken, Harbor Freight distinguishes itself by offering high-quality tools at affordable prices. The nationwide chain exclusively carries its own brands, with an aim at continuously improving quality without raising prices.

From professionals to DIY enthusiasts and skilled tradespeople, Harken indicated that the store’s overall goal is to provide tools that rival or surpass name-brand quality. “The great thing about Harbor Freight is that we continue to improve quality and expand other important product features,” he added. “As we add specs and other benefits, our prices remain the same.”

The well-known tool and equipment retailer also offers a yearly membership program, known as Inside Track Club, which delivers exclusive monthly discounts on hundreds of in-store items to members that choose to sign up.

In addition, Harken highlighted Harbor Freight’s interest in community involvement, particularly with local educational institutions such as Iowa State University and DMACC. The store plans to support programs in agriculture, engineering, and technical education. “We’re excited to be in a college town,” he said. “A lot of the majors that take place at ISU fit hand-in-hand with what we offer. It’s a prime market for us.”

As it relates to the community at-large, Harbor Freight aims to address the growing skills trade shortage through initiatives such as the ‘Tools for Schools’ program. “One of our missions is to provide and rebuild [the industry] with ‘Tools for Schools,’” he noted. “We select a number of tech and shop teachers throughout the nation and provide grants, funding, and donations both for the teachers and the schools.”

With ambitious expansion plans of opening approximately 130 stores annually, including the possibility of additional stores in central Iowa, Harbor Freight remains focused on providing value and maintaining exceptional customer satisfaction, according to Harken.

The new Ames store is located at 2701 Grand Avenue, a storefront at the North Grand Mall. The location is expected to remain open for business Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
