Ames man, tattoo artist facing multiple sexual assault charges

An Ames man is facing sexual assault charges in connection with multiple alleged incidents in central Iowa.

On June 10, an investigation began into 27-year-old Mark Cates of Ames after a victim came forward, according to a press release from the Marshalltown Police Department.

Cates is accused of assaulting a woman in November 2024 at Ink Factory Tattoo Studios, located at 19 South Center Street in Marshalltown.

As a result of the investigation, Cates was charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Cates turned himself in to Marshalltown PD in connection with the charge on Monday, stated the release.

Cates was also reportedly arrested by the Clive Police Department in late May on two counts of Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse after two victims reported they had been assaulted during their tattoo appointments. Cates is scheduled for an arraignment on July 21 at 8:00 a.m., according to court documents.

Marshalltown PD’s investigation remains ongoing.
