Monterrey Mexican Grill, featuring buffet, opens Friday in north Ames

A new Mexican restaurant is set to open soon in north Ames, offering a daily buffet and full menu of familiar favorites.

Monterrey Mexican Grill, located at 823 Wheeler Street, Suite 5, is co-owned by Simon Ruiz, Kevin Fajardo, and two other longtime restaurant workers who are teaming up for their first joint venture.

Ruiz told StoryCounty.News that the group of co-owners found inspiration to collaborate in Ames based upon their individual success stories at various eateries inside and outside the state of Iowa.

The restaurant will operate from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Monterrey’s buffet will run daily from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily and will include burritos, enchiladas, soups, ground beef, chicken, nachos, chimichangas and quesadillas. Patrons will be able to build their own tacos and customize plates with toppings such as guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and spicy salsa. Drinks will be sold separately.

Ruiz said the team is also considering rotating bar drink promotions throughout the week, including happy hour and margarita specials. No final plans have been confirmed.

The restaurant is set to open to the public Friday at 11:00 a.m. The day will function as the establishment’s soft opening, with a grand opening to come at a later date.
