Stange Road reconstruction in Ames nears completion

The reconstruction of Stange Road, which began March 17, is still set to be completed in August, according to an Iowa State University spokesperson.

The months long reconstruction project began due to the road’s age and condition. Nathan Graves, ISU’s manager of construction projects, said the project has met strict design standards for roadway replacement. The old roadway was recycled by crushing the pavement on-site and using the material as a base for the new surface. The university’s construction team hopes that having a base layer under the new pavement will extend the roadway’s life cycle.

“The project is on schedule and is set to be completed by the end of August,” Graves said. Although there were a few minor weather delays, the original August 29 deadline remains the expected end date. That’s just four days after the start of ISU’s fall 2025 semester. The goal is that Stange Road will be completed when traffic intensifies by the start of the new term.

The northbound lanes of Stange Road remained closed for a number of weeks, leading to significant detours eastbound which led vehicles east to Grand Avenue by way of 13th Street.

In recent weeks, traffic flow shifted, with northbound lanes opening back up while reconstruction continued on the opposite side of the roadway.

Graves added that they will continue to work on providing other routes for traffic until they can open another lane. “Iowa State has worked closely with the city of Ames to proactively communicate and provide alternative routes for businesses and residents impacted by the project,” Graves explained. “We’ll continue to work collaboratively with these groups throughout the project and as traffic patterns change.”

Until the project is complete, residents will continue to have an adjusted route when traveling Stange Road, impacting Veenker Memorial Golf Course, University Village, Schlitter Village, and Somerset neighborhood traffic.
