An Ames man has been arrested after police say he robbed the convenience store at which he is employed.
According to a criminal complaint, 42-year-old Antonio Cartez Evans has been charged with First-Degree Robbery, a class “B” felony, and First-Degree Harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor.
The complaint states that Evans entered the Phillips 66, also known as South Gate Expresse, located at 110 Airport Road in Ames, at approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Evans is said to have asked an employee for assistance in retrieving a knife from the display case. The victim, who is a co-worker of Evans, told authorities that Evans selected a knife from the display and proceeded to threaten him with it. The complaint states that Evans “held the knife in his hand and told the victim that he would come back to injure or kill him if he alerted any law enforcement agency.” Evans is also accused of telling the victim that he “knew where [the victim] lived,” stated the report.
According to the complaint, the victim provided Evans with access to the store safe and money from the cash register. Police say Evans also took cigarettes from the store and left the premises on a bicycle about 30 minutes later.
Evans, who has reportedly worked with the victim for the last four months, was located by officers a short time later near Evans’ residence.
The report indicates that Evans was transported to the Ames Police Department where he admitted to earlier leaving the convenience store “with cigarettes and approximately $200 in cash.” Investigators also found Evans to be “in possession of several items that matched the initial descriptions of the stolen merchandise,” per the complaint.
Evans was arrested and transported to the Story County Jail in Nevada, where he is being held on a $27,000 cash bond.
Court documents show that Evans is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, July 10 at 1:00 p.m.
