Police say a child in Ames has succumbed to his injuries after reportedly gaining access to a firearm in his home.
According to Ames Police Major Jason Tuttle, a parent of the 4-year-old male child called 911 Monday afternoon following the shooting. “We believe that the child was able to access an area of the house where the gun was located,” he explained. “The parents believed the gun was secure, but it wasn’t.”
Authorities and first responders reported to the 200 block of Sherman Avenue in Ames at approximately 2:30 p.m. and began performing medical care on the child, who was eventually transported by air ambulance to MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. The child later died at the hospital.
Tuttle told StoryCounty.News that the Ames Police Department is investigating the incident while also providing the family of the child with needed support. Ames PD will consult with the Story County Attorney’s office during the course of the investigation, according to Tuttle.
An autopsy will be performed by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
