The Ames Police Department has sent out an alert to residents of Ames, especially those near Hyland Avenue, after a string of strange burglaries in the area.
According to Ames Police Sergeant Derek Grooters, the latest of such reported incidents occurred shortly before 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Officers were called to an apartment at 145 Hyland Avenue on a report of a burglary and subsequent assault. The female victim reported that a tall black male, wearing a ski mask, black sweatpants, and a gray shirt entered her apartment and demanded money. Upon refusal by the victim, the male assaulted her and took off. The victim sustained minor physical injuries from the assault.
Grooters explained that this is just the latest in an alarming pattern of strangely similar crimes in the area. Over past months, Ames PD has investigated multiple burglaries in the 100 and 200 block of Hyland Avenue. In such reports, a male suspect has allegedly been entering females’ apartments and standing in their rooms as they sleep. Grooters also noted that items have not always been stolen in these past incidents. “We’ve kind of started to see a pattern, but it’s very scattered,” Grooters said. “We’ll have one or two happen, and then there will be a couple months where nothing happens. But we’re getting descriptions that are very similar.”
According to Grooters, the suspect’s continued actions are “very concerning” to investigators. As a result, the Ames PD has been following up on leads in the area and working with local property managers to provide extra foot patrol and surveillance.
A press release sent out today by Ames PD states that residents should be very aware of their surroundings and remain vigilant by keeping doors and windows closed and locked. Also, any suspicious activity should be reported immediately.
