A Texas woman faces an assault charge after being accused of slapping and punching an Ames paramedic during a medical response late last month.
According to Ames Police Commander Dan Walter, officers responded to an early morning report of an unconscious woman inside a car in east Ames.
Officers allegedly found the woman, later identified as 31-year-old Perla N. Williams of Texas, passed out in her vehicle in the parking lot of the Cenex gas station at 919 East Lincoln Way. “There was a strong odor of alcohol inside the vehicle,” Walter noted. “We made contact with her and called in paramedics to evaluate her.”
Walter also told StoryCounty.News that although Williams’ vehicle was not running when the officers arrived at the scene, it was apparent that she had struck a pillar on one of the facility’s gas pumps.
When paramedics arrived, they began to administer a medical evaluation on the female, who reportedly resisted their efforts. “[Williams] slapped the paramedic on the right side of the face and then punched him in the head,” Walter said. “She was evaluated by paramedics, cleared on scene, and then arrested by [Ames Police] for the assault on the paramedic.
“The paramedic did not appear to have any immediate visible injuries. And there did not appear to be any significant damage to the concrete pillar or Williams’ vehicle.”
Williams was charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, a serious misdemeanor. She was transported to the Story County Jail, where she was later released on bond.
