JUST IN: Shots fired after argument in south Ames; suspect injured, charged

Police are investigating an incident that allegedly led to a woman firing multiple gunshots into the air in south Ames late Sunday morning.

According to an Ames Police Department press release, officers responded to the area of 204 Jewel Drive at approximately 10:39 a.m. Sunday on a call of shots fired. Officers arrived to the scene to find shell casings from the shooting.

Witnesses reported a suspect hiding under a vehicle nearby, in the 3300 block of South Duff Avenue, according to the release. Police located the suspect and used her footprints to recover the weapon allegedly used in the incident.

The release stats that the shooting stems from an argument between the suspect and another female. It is believed that the suspect fired two shots into the air, injuring herself in the process. She was transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center to treat an injury to her ankle.

The suspect, whose name is currently being withheld pending positive identification, has been charged with the following crimes:

  • Intimidation With a Dangerous Weapon, a class “C” felony
  • Assault, an aggravated misdemeanor

More charges are said to be pending, per the release.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.
