Police: 17-year-old hospitalized after being hit by truck in west Ames

Authorities in Ames say a teenager was walking her dog near an intersection when she was struck by a vehicle over the weekend.

According to Ames Police Sergeant Amber Christian, an unnamed 17-year-old female pedestrian was walking near the west Ames intersection of South Dakota Avenue and Mortensen Road when the incident occurred. The pedestrian was struck by a GMC pickup truck at approximately 10:49 p.m. Saturday, stated Christian.

“Initially, [we] called for LifeFlight, but LifeFlight was delayed 40 minutes,” Christian explained. “So, [the pedestrian] went by ambulance to a Des Moines hospital.”

The pedestrian’s current medical condition has not been released. Christian told StoryCounty.News that the driver of the truck sustained no injuries and was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

The dog was taken by Ames Animal Control.

Christian confirmed that there have been multiple eyewitness reports submitted in response to the incident, which remains under investigation. No citations have been filed at this time.
