Authorities in Ames are investigating a shooting that occurred in the southwest corner of town late Thursday night.
According to Ames Police Major Jason Tuttle, officers were alerted to the incident at 11:13 p.m. Thursday when a caller reported hearing what they believed to be a gunshot.
Officers responded to the 4600 block of Mortensen Road but found no immediate evidence of gunfire.
At 12:04 a.m. Friday, the Ames Police Department received a call from MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines stating that a gunshot victim had been admitted and was receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Upon follow-up, the 19-year-old male victim told investigators that he had been shot in the lower body by an unknown person in Ames. “[The victim] told us that he and his friend came up to Ames,” Tuttle told StoryCounty.News. “All of a sudden, they hear several gunshots. They start heading back to Des Moines, and then he noticed he was shot.” Tuttle stated that neither the victim nor his friend called police to report the shooting.
While canvassing the crime scene, which is thought to be in a parking lot along the north side of Mortensen Road, police found a single shoe. The victim reportedly lost the shoe while running to the car following the gunfire.
Surveillance footage in the area has been obtained by police but does not provide much in the way of leads, according to Tuttle.
