An Ames man is reportedly fighting for his life in an area hospital after being stabbed by his roommate overnight.
According to Ames Police Commander Dan Walter, officers responded to a house at 510 Seventh Street shortly before 3:00 a.m. Saturday after a suspect called to report a stabbing. Authorities arrived at the scene to find a male victim suffering from serious injuries to his upper torso.
Officers also located the suspect, who was compliant, and placed him under arrest.
By way of the Ames Police Department’s initial investigation, it is thought that the assault was preceded by a verbal disagreement. “It started with a verbal argument between the two roommates,” Walter said. “It escalated from there into more of a physical [altercation].”
Walter told StoryCounty.News that investigators have recovered a knife, believed to be the assault weapon, from the crime scene.
The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Robert A. Lyon of Ames. He faces a charge of Attempted Murder, a class “B” felony. Online records indicate that Lyon is being held without bond at the Story County Jail in Nevada.
The victim was treated for life-threatening injuries and airlifted to a Des Moines Hospital, according to Walter. His status is currently unknown.
Walter took a moment to remind the public of the importance of deescalating before a domestic altercation turns violent. “What we always encourage people is, if they are having some sort of disagreement, to separate,” he explained. “Go for a walk or call a friend. Just get out of that situation. That is the first thing officers are going to do when they go on scene is separate people.”
