Suicidal male safely subdued by Ames Police after seven-hour stalemate

The Ames Police Department has safely subdued a suicidal subject who had kept himself barricaded inside a Maxwell Avenue home for over seven hours.

According to an Ames PD statement on social media, authorities had responded to a home in the 1800 block of Maxwell Avenue at approximately 12:18 p.m. Thursday to negotiate with a person who was reported as suicidal. A follow-up press release indicated that the male subject had barricaded himself off in the residence and began to make threats to harm others.

Ames PD and its Emergency Response Team contained the area and asked the public to stay clear of the area until the situation was resolved. According to Commander Dan Walter, the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team and Mental Health Advocate, along with other mental health professionals, worked throughout the afternoon at gaining a resolution with the individual.

At around 7:21 p.m., the individual exited the home and made an attempt at getting into a vehicle. Officers successfully took him into custody without further incident.

He was transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames for evaluation, the report noted.
