BREAKING NEWS: Man shot, killed outside north Ames apartment building

A man has been shot and killed outside of a north Ames apartment building.

According to Ames Police Commander Dan Walter, an individual called 911 at 4:39 a.m. Monday to report hearing gunshots near Wheeler Street in north Ames. Shortly thereafter, officers responded to find a deceased male with “multiple gunshot wounds” in a parking lot just west of 3021 Regency Court.

The Ames Police Department is currently canvassing the scene, but details are few at this stage, according to Walter. “Still very preliminary, but we do think there were some witnesses that potentially saw some individuals in the area after the gunshots,” he noted. “There is evidence that makes us think [the victim] lived there, but we’re still trying to validate that.”

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.

At this point in time, Walter stated that investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. “Nobody has given any indication that they are going to hurt anyone else,” he said. “Nothing has given us any indication that there is somebody on a crime spree. We believe this is an isolated event.”
