The north Ames business district will soon become home to another national brand, as T-Mobile has announced the arrival of a new retail store to the area.
According to company spokesperson Lyssa Hansen, construction is already well underway at the well-known cellular provider’s new spot. The store will inhabit the third and final suite of Building F on the corner of 30th Street and Grand Avenue, just to the northeast of the North Grand Mall itself.
Hansen explained that the store, which will be the second of its kind in Ames, will accommodate needs of both T-Mobile and Sprint customers. The two providers merged in 2020, with the Sprint brand being discontinued last August. “T-Mobile is all about changing wireless for good,” Hansen said. “We’re customer-obsessed. It’s what inspires us and drives us to look for new ways to keep customers seamlessly connected to what they love. [At the new Ames store,] customers will be able to pay their bill in person, speak with a mobile expert about the latest available smartphone devices, phone plans, and troubleshoot issues.”
T-Mobile currently serves Story County and surrounding area customers at their 701 South Duff Avenue store in Ames. The company is hopeful that the addition of the north Ames store will further encourage locals to investigate the perks of being a T-Mobile customer. “Ames was among the first places to get T-Mobile 5G when we first turned on our nationwide 5G network in December 2019,” Hansen noted. “T-Mobile customers in Ames have access to our Extended Range 5G for far reaching coverage indoors and out and our super-fast Ultra Capacity 5G. We are continuing to work on expanding our 5G coverage across Ames.”
According to Hansen, T-Mobile boasts the nation’s largest and fastest 5G network. “Ultra Capacity” 5G can reportedly deliver speeds at around 300 Megabits per second, with peaks of up to 1 Gigabit per second.
The wireless network operator, known legally as T-Mobile US, Inc., also recently launched a new “5G For All” initiative, which includes home internet options. Customers can check their home’s address eligibility at www.t-mobile.com/isp.
As T-Mobile continues to expand across the nation, stores in Iowa are being added rapidly. “T-Mobile recently opened a new retail location in Cedar Falls in February and has plans to open additional T-Mobile retail locations in Marshalltown and Mason City in the next month,” Hansen explained. “This is a part of the company’s ongoing strategy to reach more Americans and provide customers with more options when choosing a wireless provider in Iowa.”
Hansen confirmed that the new Ames store is currently slated to open in mid-May. An exact grand opening date will be announced in the coming weeks. T-Mobile plans to partner with the Ames Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon-cutting ceremony within the first month following opening day.
Upon opening, the store is expected to employ eight people in total. “We’re still searching for a Retail Associate Manager, as well as full-time and part-time Mobile Associates to join our team,” Hansen relayed. “Interested candidates can visit T-Mobile’s Careers page at www.t-mobile.com/careers, and search ‘Ames, IA’ for local job postings.”

The north Ames T-Mobile retail store will be open seven days a week, Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It will be located at 2925 Grand Avenue, Suite 103, next door to The Funky Zebras, Bella Hair Salon, and Starbucks.
