One of the more significant road construction projects in recent Ames history has reached a milestone, and city officials have announced a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the moment.
According to City of Ames Municipal Engineer Tracy Peterson, the South Grand Avenue extension project, which includes a connection between South Fifth Street and South 16th Street, has reached a major mark in its development, one that she believes will benefit a wide variety of local travelers. “Connecting South Grand Avenue provides another north-south route for motorists as well as pedestrians and bicyclists in Ames,” she said. “By providing additional roadway connections, this extension, along with improvements made to South Fifth Street, will improve traffic flow and ease congestion in the area.”
The project, which has been a work-in-progress for many years, reportedly began with intersection and utility improvements at Grand Avenue and Lincoln Way back in 2002. Since then, South Grand Avenue has been extended to meet South Fifth Street and now will run all the way to South 16th Street, changing the landscape of Coldwater Golf Links, which will be split by the roadway.
In addition, 2020 brought another aspect of the project, that of reconstructing a large portion South Fifth Street and extending it to the west, where it now meets up with South Grand Avenue.
The City of Ames, along with its contractors and consultant team, will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly completed South Grand Avenue addition on Friday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. near the South Grand Avenue and South Fifth Street intersection. The public is invited to attend, according to a City press release.
In advance of the celebration, a temporary traffic signal will be operational at South Grand Avenue and South 16th Street beginning on Monday, October 25.

“Pavement and intersection improvements” to South 16th Street on each side of South Duff Avenue are still in the works for the 2022 construction season, per the release.
