Authorities have released the names of two individuals who were killed in a fatal head-on vehicle accident near Nevada last week.

According to a press release, authorities responded to a report of a US Highway 30 head-on crash at approximately 3:10 p.m. Thursday.

Witnesses reportedly observed a Chevrolet pickup truck traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 30 and colliding with a utility van that was heading eastbound. The collision, which occurred east of 248th Street, resulted in fatalities for both drivers, who were the only individuals in the two vehicles at the time of the crash.

Both drivers were declared deceased at the scene, according to the release.

According to Story County Sheriff’s Office Captain Nicholas Lennie, the driver of the 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck has been identified as 70-year-old Louis Richard Walter of Nevada. The driver of the 2020 Ford Transit utility van has been identified as 43-year-old Trevor Dustin Sirdoreus of Marshalltown.

As the sheriff’s office awaits the results of autopsies and toxicology reports, Lennie told StoryCounty.News that investigators are still unsure of what ultimately led to the wrong-way tragedy.

The sheriff’s office was assisted in the investigation by the Nevada Police Department, Nevada First and Fire, Colo First and Fire, Story County Medical Center, and Mary Greeley Hospital.
